A compact black tourmaline crystal set within a pale albite-quartz matrix. Deep longitudinal striations emphasise its columnar form, while small reddish garnet crystals punctuate the lighter mineral surface.
Lore
Black tourmaline, known in Europe since the late Middle Ages as schorl, gradually became the subject of mystical interpretations. In nineteenth-century literature, tourmaline was associated with premonitions and visions that seemed to reveal what was hidden. Later writings on gemstones described it as particularly suited to talismans and amulets. Its black variety came to symbolise protection, warding off unwanted influences, grounding, personal boundaries and strength of will.
