Description
Blue afghanite forms irregular clusters across a pale calcite matrix, standing out against its raw, white mineral structure. Small pyrite crystals are scattered throughout the surface, introducing metallic highlights between the afghanite and calcite.
The compact form of the specimen reveals the natural arrangement of all three minerals and the contrast between vivid blue, pale calcite and the metallic reflections of pyrite.
Lore
Afghanite entered mineralogical science only in the twentieth century, when it was identified in the ancient blue-stone deposits of Afghanistan alongside lapis lazuli. For millennia, blue stones from this region travelled along ancient trade routes and appeared in amulets and sacred objects, becoming associated with protection, divine presence, regeneration and a connection to the sacred.
